Hewlett-Packard (HP) Automatic Firmware Updates

Posted by Help Desk on 11/8/2022 to Blog

        Turn Off Firmware Updates

HP is attempting to force you to purchase their Original (OEM) much more expensive HP cartridges for HP printers. HP is attempting to stop you from using inexpensive and affordable Compatible or Remanufactured toner cartridges in your HP printers. This is very annoying and quite unacceptable!

HP is doing this by sending you firmware updates for downloading to your HP printers. So, if you have an HP printer, you may have recently received a notification about a firmware update to download or it has already been automatically downloaded to your printer. This update is designed to block Compatible or Remanufactured toner cartridges from being used in HP printers. So, ignore any prompts from HP’s website for downloading new firmware. If the firmware update has been downloaded, then you will receive a firmware upgrade notice from HP indicating that your Compatible and or Remanufactured cartridges have been blocked by the printer firmware because they contain a non-HP cartridge.

Many HP customers are outraged by this as it forces you to purchase more expensive HP cartridges, instead of less expensive and effective alternatives. In this blog post, we will discuss the implications of this firmware update and provide steps for those who wish to bypass it.

HP is not the only company that has released firmware updates that lock out Compatible and Remanufactured cartridges. In the past, Brother, Canon, and Epson have tried to force users in a similar way, but have met with little or no success.  However, HP is currently very aggressive, and far exceeds all other attempts by printer manufacturers to control your ability to save money. HP currently attempts to block all Compatible and Remanufactured toner cartridges from being used in their printers. This means that HP printer owners, who download new firmware updates from HP and use either Compatible or Remanufactured toner cartridges, will have no choice but to pay far more for their toner cartridges. You need to prevent this from happening by not downloading new firmware from HP.

HP has justified their printer update, claiming that it protects the quality of their printers. They claim that using Compatible or Remanufacture cartridges can damage your printer and thereby void the warranty. This is in fact not true, and therefore unenforceable. Many HP customers know that this is simply a way for HP to try to persuade consumers to purchase more expensive OEM HP cartridges, and thereby increase HP’s profits.

Do not accept any message from HP prompting you to update your HP printer firmware. If you do update your printer firmware as prompted by HP, it will result in a “cartridge problem” message on your printer’s display, blocking you from using Compatible and or Remanufactured cartridges.

The best way to prevent unwanted automatic printer firmware downloads onto your printer, is to turn off the automatic setting on your HP printer and in that way your printer firmware cannot be “automatically updated”, and therefore future automatic firmware update issues will be overcome. With the automatic setting on your printer turned off, you will need to be prompted to download printer firmware updates, which, as mentioned above, you should not do.

You can therefore continue printing using cost effective Compatible or Remanufactured cartridges without any problems, allowing you complete control over all unnecessary printer updates and thereby allowing you substantial savings.
